Glass Snowy

9 x 15
Enamel on Glass

Yet another painting on glass that I repurposed after my hairdresser swapped out a glass shelving unit for a wooden one. Thank you Joanne Riley! This snowy white egret was perched on a limb hanging over the embankment on the back creek near our home. Couldn’t wait to get him on canvas, or glass as the case might be!!

Is that Dinner?

14 x 24
Oil on Canvas
Reproductions Available

I was watching this fella who was perched on a dead-fall of our old maple tree but he was not watching me. Rather he was watching a dinner prospect in our neighbor’s yard. I was very happy he was looking in that direction and not in my yard where my toy poodle was wandering the property. You can never be too careful with a small pet, especially in the Spring when the recently-returned osprey and other large birds might attempt a pet-snatch. Yes this guy is a predator but he’s also a very beautiful creature, especially his bright red shoulders!

Osprey No.1

11 x 8
Gouache on Watercolor Paper
Original: $200
Reproductions Available

The male ospreys arrive on St. Patty’s Day, a month or so before the females, with the sole purpose of creating a nest for their offspring. Some of them are very diligent in this regard. Others, however, fool around fishing and cavorting until their mate arrives and there is a whole lot of unpleasantness brought on by lackadaisical nest-making! It is quite fun to watch these large birds and their babies all summer and we miss them when they migrate – males to one winter location, females to another.

Bay Life Outdoor Mural

My neighbor had a whole-house generator installed at her home. Unfortunately, the contractor installed it right in front of the house directly at the end of a long driveway. She asked me to paint a bay scene of snowy white egrets for her to enhance impact the huge, white box and stand. This project involved researching primers and paints for four surfaces – vinyl, plastic, wood and metal – as well as designing a mural that could begin at the ground with bay grasses that snake up the legs of the stand and continue up onto the plastic base, the metal container and vinyl lid. It was a bit harder a task than I had anticipated because mother nature did NOT cooperate! We had a very, very wet September effectively postponing the start of my project since the self-etching metal primer was water-sensitive and would absorb any excess humidity in the air, thus failing to effectively seal the surface. 🙁  Then the colder-than-normal October forced me to paint with gloves and scarves on and witness bugs and leaves blowing into my wet paint! How do outdoor muralists do this??!! The good news: The client liked the finished project and I completed it before the inevitable snow arrives.  🙂

A familiar bird in my location on the Chesapeake Bay is the cormorant. They have a distinctive angle to their bodies as they perch on anything that doesn’t get up and move away.

Snowy White Egret

18 x 18
Oil on Canvas
Original: $575

Back to oils and the local birds. This is a snowy white egret that nests in the marsh grasses nearby. I never see more than a few snowy whites at a time but I see a fledgling now and again, so I know there are at least a couple of pairs. They must be very shy and who can blame them with the eagles and ospreys nearby?

When we were visiting my in-laws in Florida, we were standing on a dock watching fishermen clean their catch. The pelicans were very interested in any scraps that might be left unattended. This one bird landed just in front of the dock, turned to look at me as if to say, “So, what’s happening?”

Loving herons as I do, I simply had to paint another one. This one is of a more mature great blue than Great Blue Heron No.1, as evidenced by the full chest ruff of long blue feathers.
