The hen was swimming by and making such interesting whirlpools in the water that I simply had to try to get it on canvas.

Mute Swan No.2

9 x 12
Oil on Canvas
Reproductions Available

The inspiration for this painting was a particular mute who kept himself away from the rest of the swans  — both mutes and tundras — during my daily corn feeding. For some reason he was off to the side and not pushing and shoving to get into the fray. Out of concern I threw some corn directly to him and he seemed to hiss a thank you on his way back to the marsh and his nesting area.

Tundra Swan

This tundra swan was flapping his wings and making a ruckus when my neighbor spied him and ran for her camera. Thanks, Teresa, for letting me use your photograph to create this painting.

Mallard

24 x 20
Oil on Canvas
Original: $480
Reproductions Available

The mallards look like they play a lot. There’s quite a bit of dipping under the water – bottoms up! – then flapping their wings to dry them off, and just generally cavorting in the water. Hard not to like the playful  birds, except when they visit my neighbor’s swimming pool and mess it up during nesting season.

Mute No.1

8 x 10
Oil on Canvas

The non-native mute swans nest near my home on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay year-round. Although they are called “mute,” they do, in fact, make a noise — kind of like a whispery, “haaaaaaaaaahhhhh,” especially when they are trying to scare other birds – usually tundra swans and Canadian geese – away from the corn I throw out into the water each winter day for all the birds.

We only see a few great white egrets in Deale but have seen quite a few when we travel south to Florida. They resemble the snowy white egrets that nest near our home now. They are beautiful birds. I hope my painting does them justice.

Fledgling

“Fledgling” was, I think, the first baby bird I ever painted. It reminds me of the vulnerability of children as well as of the beauty of life itself no matter how new.

Canvasback

Oil on Canvas
Original: $550

There used to be many, many canvasbacks on the Bay during the winter here in Deale, Maryland. But within the last 10 years, the canvasback numbers have dwindled. I don’t believe this decline can all be placed on the shoulders of the hunters. Rather, the environment in general has declined – Less food in and around the Bay to support the myriad species of wildlife. Worrisome….

Great Glue Heron

40 x 26
Oil on Canvas
Reproductions Available

Many great blue herons nest in the marsh next door so I see them all year round, but especially in the winter, and I always marvel at their beauty. In the summer the osprey chase the great blues away from their nests so heron sightings are fewer, but I still see at least one everyday. Their beauty however is diminished as soon as they reveal their “call” as the sound they make is most unpleasant to the ears.
